Understanding Your Non-Negotiables
Before you ever step on a mat with another person, you need to know what your boundaries are. Not in theory — in practice. Real boundaries are formed by your body, your nervous system, and your past experiences.
A boundary is not a wall. It's not rigid. It's a clear conversation about what you need in order to feel safe, respected, and able to show up fully. And boundaries change. You are not locked into the boundaries you had last year.
Start by asking yourself: What makes me feel unsafe on the mat? Be specific. Is it rolling with certain people? Certain positions? Intensity levels? Being touched on certain parts of your body? The lack of communication before a roll?
Write it down. Not because you have to share it with anyone, but because the act of writing clarifies your thinking. Your body knows what it needs. Your job is to listen and translate that into language.
Your boundary is not up for negotiation. You don't need permission to have it. You don't need to justify it. "I'm not comfortable with that" is a complete sentence.
